07 January, 2024
On 5-6 January 2024, the Ambassador of Armenia to India Vahagn Afyan, the Embassy diplomats, and their family members visited Kolkata to participate in the Christmas Liturgy and Water Blessing ceremony, as well as to meet with the members of the small local Armenian community of Kolkata and the representatives of the Armenian diaspora who arrived from different parts of the country.
On the first day of the visit, the Embassy staff visited the renowned Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy of Kolkata, which has been operating for hundreds of years. Addressing the guests, the Manager of the Academy and Pastor of Armenians in India Reverend Father Tajad Tsaturyan appreciated the implementation of such a visit for the first time by the entire diplomatic staff of the Embassy. Ambassador Afyan also had a meeting with the wardens of the Church Committee of the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth Sunil Sobti and Suzan Rouben. The parties discussed traditionally constructive and further purposeful cooperation with the Armenian Embassy in New Delhi. Ambassador Afyan also got acquainted with the students of the school, and their academic achievements, as well as the teaching staff, distributing symbolic Christmas gifts on the eve of the Epiphany.
The next day, after the Devine Liturgy conducted by the Reverend Father at the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth and the official welcoming ceremony of the Ambassador of Armenia and his accompanying diplomats at the Philanthropic Academy and the signing of the visitors' book, the discussions on community issues were held at the Armenian Sports Club in Kolkata. The Ambassador of Armenia held a brief meeting with the Administrator General and Official Trustee of West Bengal Biplab Roy and exchanged views on the possible organization of the exhibition showcasing the centuries-old Armenian presence in Kolkata in the future.
